Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Athens

After time to rest following your flight, Professor Lear takes you on a walk through the center of Athens. We get our first glimpse of the Acropolis, with its glorious temples and dramatic setting-as well as of the Agora below. Gay history is all around us: we see the llissos-the river where Socrates discourses on male-male love in Plato’s dialogues; the remains of the vast temple built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian (the first great fan of Greek homosexuality); the statue of Lord Byron, the bisexual English rake whose heroic death dramatized the Greek revolution against the Ottoman Empire; and several other sights that underscore the gay theme that runs through ancient Greek history. Then it’s time to eat! We celebrate the beginning of our tour with a delicious meal of traditional Greek food, at a roof-top restaurant with a splendid view of the illuminated Acropolis.

HERODION HOTEL
Truly the best hotel location in Athens, just one block from the walkway around the Acropolis.  The Herodion is a charming and pleasant hotel—and just wait till you see the views from the rooftop bar!  There are other great hotels in Athens, but this is our favorite, and we very rarely get to use it.

Day 2The Acropolis and more

Today we spend the morning exploring the Acropolis with our archaeologist guide: first the hilltop itself and then the excellent new museum at its base. After a lovely lunch in the museum’s neighborhood, we continue our exploration of the heart of the ancient city, visiting the Agora, which served as the city’s central marketplace and the Kerameikos, or main cemetery, where Pericles delivered his immortal funeral oration. We learn about the glory of classical Athens, while focusing on the central role of same-sex relations in Athenian culture: in particular, we learn about Harmodius and Aristogeiton, the gay couple that served as Ancient Athens’ Uncle Sam. This evening is free for your own explorations of our hotel’s neighborhood-the Plaka, the heart of historic Athens.

Day 3Mythic Mycaenae and Tragic Epidauros

Today we take a trip out of Athens to explore the fascinating sights of the northern Peloponnese, just across the Corinthian Gulf. Our first stop is at Epidauros, to visit the world’s best-preserved ancient theater.  Next, we visit the mysterious ruins of Mycenae, center of the world of the Iliad-where we will discuss the fascinating relationship of the hero Achilles and his friend (and possibly lover) Patroclus. Finally, we go to Nemea, the site of one of the ancient Greek world’s four great athletic competitions. Less well known than Olympia, Nemea is of special interest to us for the astonishing homoerotic graffiti from 2500 years ago preserved on its walls. Today the area around Name is famed for its vineyards, and we have a late lunch, followed by a wine tasting, before returning to Athens for a free evening.

Day 4Amazing Delphi

Today we make a second day excursion, to visit another one of Greece’s most famous sites, the vast temple complex of Delphi. Here the ancients came to consult the oracles of Apollo, which they received from the ravings of a drugged priestess. We take a thorough look at the vast site and the museum, and pay special attention to the cult statue of the divine Antinous, the emperor Hadrian’s deified lover-and pagan competitor for Jesus Christ! Statues of Antinous have been found throughout the Greco-Roman world, but as we will see, the statue in Delphi seems to have been worshipped with special zeal. Lunch is included en route. On our way back to Athens, we stop at a rarely visited site that is rich in gay history: the lion monument of Chaironeia. Built to commemorate the Sacred Band, the crack regiment of later classical Greece, the monument honors a warrior unit composed exclusively of lover/beloved couples. We return to Athens for a final free evening.

Day 5National Archaeological Museum and free afternoon

This morning, we cross Athens to visit the National Archaeological Museum, with the world’s greatest collection of ancient Greek sculpture. Our visit focuses on the amazing history of the male nude in ancient Greek art, plus a number of other fascinating artifacts that include Greek vases (Professor Lear’s specialty).  This afternoon is free, for shopping, more archaeological touring, or perhaps a short tour to the Athenian shore and the iconic temple of Neptune on the coastal headlands at Sounio—where you can look for Lord Byron’s graffito signature!  In the evening we offer an optional lesson in traditional Greek cooking with a prominent local chef, where we will enjoy the results of our cooking.

Days 6-7Stunning Santorini

We take an early morning ferry across the Aegean for lovely views of the Cycladic islands, landing in Santorini before lunch. We spend two days exploring this ravishing island, curved around the bay created in prehistoric times by a sunken volcanic caldera. We visit Akrotiri, the Minoan city that may have inspired the Atlantis legend, ancient Thera—a rarely visited mountaintop Spartan colony whose graffiti provide the earliest evidence for male-male love in the Greek world— as well as the island’s sparkling white “modern” villages famous for the spectacular sunsets over the caldera and the donkeys that form their traditional transport system. Lunch will be included on both days as we explore the island; evenings will be free for relaxed dinners.

Secret View Hotel.  This stunning hotel, with spectacular views and 2 beautiful pools, is within an easy walk of Santorini’s most-loved village, Oia, but in a quiet, secluded spot, away from the crowds.  Want to gaze at Oia’s famous sunsets without the crowd?  This is the place to do it.

Days 8-9Greece's Gayest Island

A short two-hour ferry ride takes us to Mykonos, perhaps the loveliest of the Greek islands, famous for its beautiful white village, its turquoise sea, its beaches-and its gay nightlife. We visit Mykonos town, with its hundreds of little churches—ad also its archaeological museum, with some explicitly sexy images from ancient times—and we also spend a full morning on the nearby island of Delos, the Greek Pompeii, with its amazingly well-preserved ancient city-including the famous row of phalluses in front of the temple of Bacchus! And on Day 9, we will have one last lovely Greek seafood dinner to toast our new friends, this beautiful country, and its fabulous gay past!

Myconian Korali.  Elegant but friendly, this Relais et Chateaux hotel is a great place to relax, with fabulous views out over the Aegean, a gorgeous pool, and superb food (especially the wonderful breakfast buffet!).

Day 10Farewell to Greece

Our tour ends with breakfast this morning, but let us know if we can help with your flight arrangements or further travel plans.

FAQs

Question 1Who is our guide?

Professor Andrew Lear accompanies all of our tours. He is our founder; a famous scholar of same-sex love in the ancient world; and a master guide. Early in his career, Professor Lear won the Harvard Certificate of Excellence in Teaching five times, and on our tours you will see why! He really has the knack of making complex issues comprehensible—and entertaining. In most places, we are also required to have a local guide, and Professor Lear has developed a cadre of specially trained guides to work alongside him.

Question 2Can I take this tour next year instead?

Professor Lear doesn’t have the time to do 10 tours a year, so our tours are not offered on an annual basis. Our general advice is: if you are interested, come on the tour!  You never know when our tours will be offered again.

Question 3Is this a good tour for singles?

Absolutely. Our tour groups consist of a mix of singles and couples, usually about 50/50. One thing we can guarantee is that no-one will be left out of any conversation or plan because they are single. On the very first tour we did, we came downstairs in the hotel and found the entire group hanging out in the hotel bar. And that is the way our groups are. They make lots of plans in the evening, and everyone is always welcome.

Question 4Is this a good tour for seniors?

Absolutely. The average age of our guests is in the 60s, and we often have guests in their 80s.

Question 5Is this a good tour for people with difficulty walking?

If you are worried about this, please contact us to discuss. This tour involves a fair amount of walking, in museums, city centers (which in Italy are pedestrian zones), and archaeological sites (which may of course have uneven ground). However, we have had many guests with difficulty walking or climbing stairs, and we generally manage to accommodate them, with a little flexibility on all sides.

Question 6Will the restaurants on the tour accommodate my dietary limitations?

Absolutely. Just let us know in advance, and we will handle it.

Question 7 Is this a good tour for lesbians? What about trans people?

Our tours cover all kinds of LGBTQ+ history and art.  The cultural material on some of our tours (especially in Italy and Greece) is more about gay male issues—but this is not true on other tours, for example, in England or Germany, where we cover a wide spectrum of LGBTQ+ material.  Our groups are also very welcoming. We have had a great variety of guests in our groups (incuding even a few allies!) and they have been very much part “one of the family.”

Question 8Is this a good tour for partying or hooking up?

We don’t believe so. Of course we don’t know everything that goes on, but our impression is that our tours are GREAT for making friends instead. Note:  we include tours of gay nightlife in a few cities (Berlin and Tokyo so far), but in any case, we provide information about gay bars, saunas, etc.  And we know what many of our guests go, often with others from the tour group.

Question 9What is the level of the hotels? Are they gay friendly?

Our hotels are gay friendly, absolutely.  In Europe and Japan, our hotels are generally carefully chosen 4 star hotels. As a rule, we choose hotels for modern comfort, historic charm, and central location. In India and Nepal, we use almost exclusively 5 star hotels (except for one restored palace).

Question 10What is the level of the food?

We are big foodies, and the meals on our tours are generally very good. In fact, we have often been told we could sell our tours as gourmet experiences. We are particularly concerned to include local specialties and regional cuisines.

Question 11What meals are included in the tour?

We include breakfast every day and on European tours generally one other substantial meal (though occasionally none or two).  Since our tours often include activities both morning and afternoon, we tend to include lunch.  And we tend to leave you free in the evening, except for the first and last evenings on the tour, when we have welcome and farewell dinners—though of course sometimes we include an extra dinner.  This tour includes breakfast every day, 5 lunches, and 2 dinners–all gourmet.

Question 12Is this trip all-inclusive?

Our tours are not 100% all-inclusive, although pretty close.  We include all hotel accommodation during the tour, transportation as per the itinerary, all admissions, and guiding. We include breakfast every day and on European tours generally one other substantial meal (though occasionally none or two).  Note:  we are NOT in the business of “upselling” our guests. There are very few optionals on our tours—and they are only things we really believe that some guests may not want to do (e.g. helicopter trips).

Question 13Will we have free time during the tour?

We generally leave the group free in the evenings, and when we are in a major city, we include a free afternoon, for shopping, more museums etc.  On this tour, there are 3 free afternoons, 1 each in Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos.

Question 14Will we visit places that are not open to the public?

Our tours are based on a very high level of knowledge about LGBTQ+ history and art, and indeed about history and art in general.  As a result, we include many places that are interesting and/or important but not well-known.  Some of these, like the bar where Oliver plays cards with the locals while Elio watches him in Call Me By Your Name, may be closed to the public or difficult to access; others, like the penis temple of Nagoya, are simply not on the beaten tourist path.

Question 15Is Greece a safe country for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Greece is a gay-friendly country, especially Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos.  And in 2024, it became the first Orthodox Christian country to legalize gay marriage!

Question 16Do I need travel insurance?

YES.  A tour is a big investment, so you need insurance in case you are forced to cancel too late for a refund.  This doesn’t happen often, but it has happened a few times in the 13 year life of this company, and the travel insurance companies have been very helpful.  But note:  you also need travel insurance in case of medical emergency.  Your US insurance probably does not cover you abroad, and as we all know, you never know when something will come up.  A friend of mine fell on a trip a few years ago and ended up being medivaced from Tunisia to Germany and ultimately back to the US.  This would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but luckily, he had good travel insurance, and it was covered 100%.  Note:  You can buy travel insurance from our ticketing platform, WeTravel, but that that is not obligatory.  You should get an insurance policy, but it does not need to be from WeTravel.

Question 17What is your cancellation policy?

Our cancellation policy is flexible.  Before the full-payment deadline, we will return any of your deposit that hasn’t been put down in deposits—which generally means we can return 100%.  After the full-payment deadline, it is critical (again) that you have travel insurance, as travel insurance will refund your trip in an emergency more completely than we can.  We can assure you that it works, because we have seen it work several times:  a few guests have had to cancel at the last minute, have been completely reimbursed by their insurance, and in most cases have taken the same tour with us the next time it was offered.

Question 18Are payment plans available?

Yes, we can make a payment plan according to your needs.

I’ve never had interest to travel with a tour group before. But the idea of seeing a country with a carefully curated itinerary that would highlight LGBT history and art by Andrew Lear was too attractive an idea not to try. And I’m so glad I did! My trip to Greece was really wonderful. It provided an exceptional overview of the country and its history and art. Andrew was a delightful and charming host and filled with such incredible knowledge. I also enjoyed traveling with a like-minded group of men and found their company to be an unexpected highlight of the trip. I look forward to my next trip with Oscar Wilde Tours!

My husband and I participated in this tour (October 2025) and it was the trip of a lifetime! I had very high expectations and this tour exceeded them completely. The program included in-depth tours of Athens and its antiquities (highlighted of course by the Acropolis and the magnificent Parthenon, and the Acropolis and Archaeological museums), day trips to Mycenae and Delphi, with a knowledgeable local guide providing the history and stories of the ancient world, supplemented by Professor Lear’s discussion of the gay history and significance of the sites and the people. The five days in mainland Greece were followed by two days each on the islands of Santorini and Mykonos, again with excellent local guides and Professor Lear’s commentary. All of the hotels were exceptional, particularly the Herodion which sits at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens with impressive views of the Parthenon from the rooftop bar. Above all, we had a great group of people on the tour, the 12 of us had wonderful camaraderie and this enhanced the tour significantly. This was the best vacation that we have ever taken–and we have now booked the England tour for May!

I am forever changed by Andrew Lear’s dedication to excellence of experience. Luxurious Hotels (those breakfast buffets! Gentile hotel staff!), are centrally located (as in Athens) or placed just outside of the bustling sections (as in Santorini and Mykonos) to provide an exclusive experience. Rigorous touring schedules of excavation sites and museums are accessed by private vans, seamlessly hosted by both Andrew and on site private guides. No time is wasted, lectures occur both as you travel and once on site. Andrew is extremely accessible the entire tour, he’s a charming and knowledgeable host; sunny, warm and welcoming, think “Santa Claus with a cute waistline.” I had the most thrilling and stimulating time of my life!

After 20 years of studying gay history around the world, we finally made it to Greece. Hearing the stories of Apollo and Hyacinthus, of Achilles and Patroclus, of Alexander and his loves and so many more, where they actually happened was incredibly meaningful. Bravo to the brilliant Professor Lear for helping travelers feel not like sightseers but like explorers.
